for secretary of state, u.s. ambassador to the u.n. susan rice. that's what is written there. for the president, is this about taking care of an old friend or trying to make up for rice? >> actually, i think it's about choosing what he believes is the best person for the job and sticking by him, which i think is admirable. look, the reality here is this is about politics. this is not about benghazi. if it was about benghazi, you could have held up john kerry. they didn't. this is something that exists between republicans and senator hagel because he dared questioned them about the iraq war. so that i think is the are reality that we're facing. i think the problem with the republicans is, be how much longer can they continue to play these games on these issues and think it's not going to hurt them? in fact, it already has. they are becoming a caricature of a political party because when you admit to the american people it's not about substance, it's about a 7-year-old issue that you have a problem with, a personal issue, that doesn't necessarily create a lot of confidence that your criticisms ar

my district is fort knox, 5,000 civilian employees of the u.s. army. there will be substantial furloughs and possibly layoffs there if the sequester were in effect for any length of time. so we've got a few days to act. i think we could actually come up with something that just delays the sequester until march 27th. then we would have four weeks in session. we'll all be back for four consecutive weeks to figure out how to fund the government for the rest of the year. because it's -- none of it's going to make any difference after march 27th because the government runs out of money then. >> all right. so you're saying push it off just a little bit further after you get back into a legislative session but as we look at what john boehner has responded by putting out a couple tweets this morning roughly right before we went on the air, talking about where the president has been saying president obama is virtually absent from legislative process and making no discernible effort to replace mishiss sequester. he went on to say mr. president we agree your sequester is bad policy. what

on this behind the scenes and someone decided to give it to "u.s.a. today" and "u.s.a. today" reported on it and now everyone is talking about. the thing here, thomas, is that republicans overall criticism is that the president doesn't lead, the president doesn't lead on the economy, the president doesn't lead on immigration. the president doesn't lead on gun control if you will. when the president does take action, action that he telegraphed verbally saying if congress doesn't do something, i am going to step in and do something, they criticize him for taking the steps to jump into a position to lead on an issue that he cares about that a lot of other people care about. thomas, if the immigration panel in the senate falls flat as we have seen happen many times in congress, come up with gangs and try am to come up with plans and nothing happens. if the immigration gang falls flat, the president would be in a position to step in and say, here, here is the plan, republicans want to say to the president playing politics with this and i think the president is trying to get something done.

as u.s. ambassador telling a newspaper that gays should not represent america, especially, quote, openly, aggressively gay like hormel. we fast forward and hormel is now putting his support behind chuck hagel. ambassador hormel joins me live from san francisco. great to have you here with me this morning. when we talk on the heels on the op-ed you wrote this week, saying hagel has taken stock regarding disparaging remarks he made about me, he issued an apology, times and minds have changed. but we remind everybody, sir, back in december, you did not accept that apology, telling the "washington post," i thought this so-called apology which i haven't received but which was made public had the air of being a defensive move on his part. so he has not apologized to you, at least as far as i know, has not apologized to you in person. so why change your viewpoint now in this latest op-ed? >> well, thank you for asking that. because i've had the opportunity to examine the circumstances, and what i find is a person who has done something which is unique, if not -- well, may not be unique.
